Insider Guide to Taste of Hong Kong 2017

March 9, 2017

Taste of Hong Kong is back next week and our very own Café Gray Deluxe from The Upper House is participating for the second year. We’ve gone behind the scenes to speak with Simon Wilson, Head of IMG Culinary Asia for some insider tips on attending the festival this year.

Last year was the first Taste of Hong Kong, how did the idea come about?

Taste is the most serious, indulgent and exciting food festival, bar none – across the world. Taste Festivals is now celebrated in 19 destinations including Paris, London, Rome, Dubai and Sydney.

When we decided it was time to spread the love to Asia, Hong Kong obvious first choice in the region. It’s famous internationally for its cuisine and multi-culturalism. Food is the way to every Hong Konger’s heart. The appetites and knowledge of fine food is ever growing, and the restaurant scene is dynamic and ever changing. Located in the heart of Asia, we want to be able to give everyone who lives and travels here access to world class cuisine, in a fun festival vibe that hasn’t been done before.

We are excited to see the festival evolve and grow.

How did you select the restaurants and artisan producers for Taste of HK 2017?

The selection process for restaurants is a collaborative and editorial one – we speak with food writers, critics, Chefs and foodies of note to compile a “hit list” of restaurants. We then invite restaurants to participate. This process is the same for Taste Festivals the world over. We want to have the latest, greatest and hottest restaurants involved in the event, so it’s important to keep our ear to the ground and our finger on the pulse of the local dining scene.

To ensure we have a Gourmet Market that allows visitors to discover, we make sure we put ourselves out there and search for rare artisanal producers that speak premium quality. We basically build a dream shopping list and look for the people that fit the bill. We also like to introduce new trends and rare brands to the city.   This year we have 60+ producers at Taste of Hong Kong

Taste of Hong Kong is the first of IMG’s Taste Festivals in Asia and the response has been incredible from the Foodie community last year.

What can we expect from Taste of HK this year?

Seeing Hong Kongers embrace the festival with such a high level of excitement, we decided to make the second edition 25% bigger. Taste of Hong Kong will be raising the bar once again bringing over 50 signature dishes on tasting plates and iconic one-off festival creations from participating restaurants, a third of which are new to the line- up this year.

Foodie fanatics have the opportunity to build their dream menu from the best restaurants the city has to offer, with 10 Michelin starts on the line-up: Amber, Arcane, Café Gray Deluxe, CHINO, Duddell’s, Kaum at Potato Head, Mercato, Okra, Rhoda, RONIN, Serge et Le Phoque, Tin Lung Heen, Tosca, Yardbird and ZUMA, and visiting Kei Restaurant brought to you by Taste the World with Etihad Airways, all the way from Paris!

Adding to the stellar line-up of culinary talent, Chef Nick Kim of New York’s hottest table Shuko is flying in from Manhattan to perform live demonstrations at the Porsche Taste Theatre in association with Food Network alongside from the likes of Chefs Richard Ekkebus of Amber, Shane Osborn of Arcane, Max Levy of Okra, Aaron Gillespie of 22 Ships, Lee Man Sing of Mott 32 and more.
