ENCOUNTERS ACROSS CULTURES: THE HOUSE COLLECTIVE ART PROGRAMME IS HERE!
Beginning in March 2019, The House Collective will be debuting their first inaugural Art Programme ‘Encounters Across Cultures’. This year, showcasing installations by esteemed Swiss artist, Katja Loher.
This year’s exhibition themed ‘Seeds of Life’ opens 22 March 2019 and will run through all four Houses, starting at The Opposite House in Beijing, flowing through The Upper House in Hong Kong in May, The Middle House in Shanghai in August and concluding at The Temple House in Chengdu in October 2019. The House Collective is known for its individuality and personalised engagement with its guests; “seasoned travelers with a genuine passion for art and culture.” The Art Programme will offer guests a unique art experience and an artistic perspective on the city in which they are staying.
‘Encounters across Cultures: Seeds of Life’ will celebrate each House’s connection to both local and global cultures as well as its individuality. The installations are inspired by Katja’s encounters with local artists, giving a unique perspective to the city, along with the Chinese five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
Having exhibited in Shanghai, Japan and Beijing, as well as all around Europe, Katja is very much influenced by her travels throughout Asia and her study of Eastern Culture.
“I try to free video from technology… I see art as a language, and technology is only something elementary.”
Katja’s Videosculptures are changing the face of video art, freeing the medium from its rigid, rectangular platform and transporting it into free flowing, organic shapes; engaging a human element within her artmaking. The artist says of her practice, “through my work I want to stimulate dreams, experimentation, imagination and humor to reveal perspectives that we all too often lack in everyday life. With my Videosculptures I try to free video from technology, because I see art as a language, and technology is only something elementary.” ‘Encounters Across Cultures’ will be the first time Katja is filming on-site in China playing directly with Chinese character inspired choreography.
“I want to stimulate dreams”
‘Encounters Across Cultures’ is an exciting new initiative and is the first of many to come. Be sure to come check out the final installations in their full form at any (or every!) one of our Houses.
